Tips and Tricks

This page has important information to ensure you get the most out of Podcast RSSer

It is becoming important to have your website support HTTPS. If your server supports it use “https://“ in your URLs. Unfortunately, the RSS2 standard only accepts http://“, so some validation sites may give you incorrect errors. Apple prefers secured servers and Podcast RRSer can only confirm those URLs.

Only mark one category as the default. The others will be included in your details but only the default category will be displayed on iTunes.

The Language tag must be an ISO 639-1 code. See the link in Resources for a full list of these.

The RSS File URL tag on the Channel panel is not used by Podcasts Connect and can be omitted, but your validation tool may check for it and complain if you do. It must be included if you are going to share your podcast with our community via the new share option.

The Publication Date button will enter today’s date.

The GUID button will generate a new unique identifier key. Unless you use a PermaLink, each episode will need one.

When Importing from RSS file, if there is no Description or Note the Summary is duplicated into these fields. This means you can shorten the Summary, or make edits without losing the original text.

If you make manual edits to the RSS XML page they will be saved into your xml and may break your feed. Always check with a validator if you’re manually tweaking your rss!

Channels marked Completed can have no additional Episodes. Checking this box in the Channel also disables the add and remove buttons on the Episodes panel.

Channels and Episodes marked Block will not be published in iTunes.

Podcasts with the same RSS Order will appear in an unpredictable order.

Multiple Categories marked Default will appear in an unpredictable order.

Use Preferences to enter your defaults.

Use the Block checkbox when you’re planning ahead in Podcast RSSer. Channels and Episodes marked Block will not be published in iTunes.

You can add additional Categories as you wish, they will not show in iTunes but will help with searching.

The GUID can be marked as a PermaLink for the podcast file.

Changing the Episode # will change the order of the published podcasts. (see Gotcha)

You can click Generate RSS at any time to view the xml for the data you’ve entered so far. During the learning process, it can help to copy and paste the data from the xml tab into an online validator tool.

Duration can now be entered in 2 modes:
All seconds up to 65,500.
Hour : Minute : Second and it will be converted to seconds.

Warning Lables and Failed RSS Generation

Podcast RSSer is a lot less pedantic about failing the generated feed. It will indicate missing Required and Recommended information with the highlighted label color.

It will now only fail the generation when the Required information is missing. If you only provide the Required information it may lead to failed submission or validation checks.

Existing RSS

If you already have a RSS feed file, you can open it from the File Menu, Open RSS File…

App Transport Security policy

Due to security restrictions on Apps in the App store we can not open files using http://, we can only open https://, if your image files are located on a server which only supports http:// you will not be able to Confirm the image’s location or size.

"Do I need to use HTTPS?

Apple strongly encourages you to use a hosting server that supports SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). This security technology will allow you to generate an HTTPS RSS feed URL.

In the future, HTTPS RSS feeds will be required for submission in Podcasts Connect and to access Podcast Analytics.

Most major hosting services offer secure RSS feeds. They can also help you migrate your feed if the one you're currently using does not support SSL."
